The aging mouse brain: cognition, connectivity and calcium

چکیده
Aging is a complex process that differentially impacts multiple cognitive, sensory, neuronal and molecular processes. Technological innovations now allow for parallel investigation of circuit function, structure composition in the brain awake behaving adult mice. Thus, mice have become critical tool to better understand how aging brain. However, more granular systems-based approach, which considers impact age on key features relating neural processing, required. Here, we review evidence probing mouse We focus range processes including cognitive abilities, sensory systems, synaptic plasticity calcium regulation. Across many find prominent age-related dysregulation even before 12 months age, suggesting emerging alterations can manifest by late adulthood. also reports some are remarkably resilient aging. The suggests does not drive parallel, linear all but instead earlier, severely, than others. propose capturing fine-scale vulnerability resilience may provide opportunities rejuvenation aged

Brain Connectivity and Aging
here is growing evidence that in the aging process both the neural and the vascular aspects of brain function are affected. On the neural side, aging is associated with damage to the myelin sheaths and reduction in the total number of nerve fibers, resulting in a reduction in structural connectivity [1]. But connections in the brain are not only structural (i.e. synapses, axons, etc.); equally ...
متن کاملExercise, cognition, and the aging brain.
We provide a brief review of the literature on exercise effects on brain and cognition. To this end, we focus on both prospective and retrospective human epidemiological studies that have examined the influence of exercise and physical activity on cognition and dementia. We then examine the relatively small set of human randomized clinical trials that have, for the most part, focused on exercis...
متن کاملLinking Structural Brain Disease, Connectivity and Cognition
Are structural changes in the brain a normal byproduct of the aging process? This complex question can be addressed by separately evaluating the contribution of four commonly observed changes—cortical atrophy (increased sulcal cerebrospinal fluid), central atrophy (ventricular enlargement), deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMHs) and periventricular hyperintensities (PVHs)—all of which can b...
متن کاملThe emotive brain, the noradrenergic system, and cognition
Motivation and attention can have a profound influence on perception, learning and memory. Neuromodulatory systems, especially the noradrenergic (NE) system, co-vary with psychological states to modulate cortical arousal, influence sensory processing and promote synaptic plasticity. There is even some suggestion that the NE system might facilitate functional recovery after brain damage. Post-sy...
